When does your business have to get its own website?
What’s a good idea to build your own website for your business?
It’s a question we’ve heard before.
But with all the buzz around the “internet of things” and how to integrate it into your business, it’s hard to know exactly how to choose which option is best.
And even if you did, the results will vary based on your company’s goals and business needs.
“There are lots of different types of websites you could build for your website,” says Sarah Mertz, CEO of The Digital Business Report, a digital marketing consulting firm.
“For instance, you could have a landing page, a landing form, a search form, or a contact form.
There’s a lot of options.
But there’s no universal formula for it.”
If you have a niche product or service that you want to grow, Merts recommends that you build a landing screen with a clear purpose, as opposed to building something with a ton of content.
“You can build something like this for a small business, and you’ll have to create a lot more than you would with an established business,” she says.
“It’s much easier to just build the landing page for your product, but the result could be a product that doesn’t sell very well.”
For example, your product might be a blog, and it could be something more.
“Your landing page could be your blog that’s just about content, and there’s nothing special about it,” Mertis says.
“[The landing page] might be like this.
‘Hi, I’m just trying to share this cool new product that I think is super awesome, and I’m looking for people to try it.’
That’s all that you would need.”
In this case, the landing form is more than just a way to find people to buy your product.
The landing page is a way for the brand to share the product with the world.
“If you’ve got a product, then you can just post the landing pages of people who have tried it and you’ve actually made something that’s a little bit more than a product,” Merstz says.
For a startup, building a landing site isn’t as difficult as it seems.
Mertiz says that a lot can be learned by building landing pages with clear goals and clear business needs, and then building them in a way that fits within your company.
“Just because your landing page has a goal doesn’t mean you have to have it,” she explains.
“What if you had a product page that had a goal of, ‘I’m going to make this product that people are going to like?’.
That would be great.”
Mertzes landing pages can also be a great way to build a reputation and brand, she adds.
“Even if you don’t have a lot going on with your product right now, it might be nice to show your users that you’ve built a product and that you’re actually really good at what you’re doing,” she adds, explaining that there’s always a market for that type of thing.
“But if you have an idea that’s really cool, and maybe you’re a bit behind, you can show people that you are able to build something really special, and really awesome.”
You don’t need to have a website to have landing pages, however.
“In fact, it actually makes sense to build landing pages in a completely different way,” Mervis says, pointing out that landing pages are actually a good way to show that you actually have something going on in your business.
“A lot of times, when we have a really big, important idea that we want to share, we use a landing that’s all about building momentum, that’s about building a business, that has a really clear purpose.
If it’s not clear, then that’s not a landing you should be building, but you can always do a better job of explaining what it is you’re building.”
It’s important to note that it’s also important to know how to properly build a website.
“Building a landing is a very complex task,” says Merttz.
“And a lot has to go into it, so it’s really important to have some understanding of what is going on behind the scenes.”
